The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO), operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has officially handed over Lot 3 of the Gravity Flow Water Systems construction project in Kenema District to Castleton Rhodes Commodities LLC.

The ceremony was reportedly held under the leadership of SALWACO’s first female Managing Director, Ing. Tiideni Hawa Jabbi.

The handover represents a key milestone in a Government of Sierra Leone-funded initiative aimed at improving water supply and sanitation services across Kenema District. When completed, the project will deliver reliable and sustainable access to safe drinking water to ten chiefdoms within the district.

In her keynote address, Ing. Jabbi asserted that the project reflects the Government’s strong commitment to improving citizens’ lives through access to clean and safe water. She encouraged the people of Kenema to take full ownership of the facilities, referring to the project as “their baby,” and urged communities to protect and maintain the infrastructure to ensure its sustainability.

She noted that the successful implementation of the gravity flow systems will improve free-flowing water access, ease water-related challenges, and contribute significantly to better public health outcomes in beneficiary communities.

Earlier in the programme, the Director of Operations, Ing. Abdul Ben Lebbie, introduced the Managing Director and subsequently invited the Regional Manager-East, Mr. Brima Alieu, to deliver the welcome address on behalf of the eastern region.

Providing technical insight into the project, the Director of Project Management, Ing. Yankuba Jusu Tarawally, disclosed that the project will run for sixteen months and involves the construction and rehabilitation of ten gravity water systems designed to meet required operational standards.

Representing the Kenema District Council, Deputy Chairman Mr. Umaru Daboh thanked the Government of Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, through SALWACO, for prioritizing water infrastructure development in the district. He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting and safeguarding the project.

The Town Chief of Kenema, Chief Kenie Momoh Ngonbulango, also welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation to the Government and SALWACO for addressing the long-standing water needs of the people of Kenema.

On behalf of the contractor, the Chief Executive Officer of Castleton Rhodes Commodities LLC, Mr. Thomas Daddy Brima, assured stakeholders of the company’s readiness to deliver the project within the agreed timeframe and in line with approved quality standards.

The ceremony brought together key stakeholders, district authorities, and members of SALWACO’s management and staff.
