In the wake of the devastating collapse of a seven-story building at Shell New Road, Freetown, Dr. Samura Kamara, former presidential candidate and chairman of the All People’s Congress (APC), has expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy that has claimed multiple lives.

As rescue efforts continue, Kamara shared a heartfelt message, offering condolences and pledging support to both victims and those involved in the ongoing operations.

Dr. Kamara’s statement reads, “My heart is heavy with grief as our nation witnesses the devastation caused by the collapse of a seven-story building at Shell New Road.

I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the eight victims so far who tragically lost their lives in this disaster, including three adult males, two adult females, two young girls, and a young boy.

The loss of these innocent lives, particularly the children, is a heartbreaking reminder of the vulnerability of our people.”

He also expressed solidarity with the survivors, commending the medical teams for their swift response and urging them to provide the highest standard of care to those injured.

To the survivors who have been pulled from the rubble, I offer my unwavering support and prayers for your recovery. You have endured unimaginable trauma, and as I commend the medical teams for their heroic intervention, I likewise urge them to provide the best possible care as you heal from this catastrophe,” Kamara added.

Kamara extended his gratitude to the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), the Freetown City Council (FCC), defense personnel, volunteers, and all on-site workers for their relentless efforts in the search and rescue mission.

He lauded their bravery, noting, “Your courage and commitment to saving lives in these dangerous conditions embody the spirit of Sierra Leone. We are all deeply grateful for the risks you are taking to bring more of our brothers and sisters to safety. Your service is an exemplary sacrifice to the nation and humanity.”

As the nation grapples with the emotional toll of the disaster, Kamara called for unity and collective action in preventing future tragedies. “Let us continue to stand together as a nation in this time of sorrow for these and for all other victims of similar disasters in recent times. I pledge my support in ensuring we learn from this tragedy and take every possible step to prevent future disasters.”

With rescue operations ongoing, Dr. Kamara ended his statement with a message of hope for those still trapped. “We remain hopeful as rescue efforts progress. Our thoughts and prayers are with those still trapped under the debris, and we pray for their safe recovery.”
