Save the Children Sierra Leone yesterday the 6th December 2022 , engaged the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, at his office, Police Headquarters, George street in Freetown.
This follows a previous engagement on the 18th October 2022, at the Police Headquarters, on a six years project on the pressing issues of Sexual Gender Base Violence (SGBV), Rape, Teenage Pregnancy, Early Child Marriage and Adolescent Related Issues.
At the follow-up visit yesterday, the Programme Director Save The Children, Modupe Taiwo, spoke on range of issues concerning the project that specifically target Kailahun District. Owing to the nature of the project, Madam Taiwo sees the police as a potential partner in the successful implementation of the project, especially with the Family Support Unit (FSU).
They discussed issues like: Early Child Marriage, Preventing Teenage Pregnancy, Rape, Protect The Adolescent Age And Get Them Stay In School, Police Recruitment For Female, Capacity Building And Training For FSU Personnel, Sexual Gender Base Cases And Investigation.
With that, She requested for effective collaboration and support from the IGP to implement the projects which targets 128,000 Adolescents.
The IGP in turn responded affirmatively noting that, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), is open to working with other agencies and ready to cooperate especially when it has bearing on law enforcement.
He thanked and appreciated the kind gesture of Save the Children to visit and discuss partnership on the said projects, enlightening them on issues of challenges surrounding investigating sexual cases, more so having to wait for legal advice, which normally takes time as well as the issue of some parents that connive with offenders to destroy evidence and abandoned the cases.
Having said that, IGP Sellu concluded by assuring Madam Modupe Taiwo of the SLP’s fullest cooperation at all times.
