The Security Sector of Sierra Leone has expressed deep concern over the increasing incidence of tribal and hate messages circulating on social media platforms, targeting specific ethnic groups within the country.
The Security Sector views this disturbing trend as a potential threat to the peace and unity of a nation that has only recently emerged from a devastating civil conflict.
The Security Sector strongly condemns the actions of certain individuals, both within Sierra Leone and abroad, who are using social media to spread divisive messages that incite tribal tensions. According to them, Such behavior is not only self-serving, but also illegal, counterproductive, and does not reflect the shared heritage of our diverse nation.
While the Security Sector acknowledges the importance of freedom of speech as a fundamental human right, it emphasizes that defaming the reputation of individuals or ethnic groups through malicious tribal rhetoric falls outside the boundaries of human rights and is considered deviant.
Effective immediately, the Security Sector announces that anyone found guilty of recording, sharing, or forwarding tribal or hate messages targeting individuals or ethnic groups will be committing a punishable offense and will face the full force of the law.
The Security Sector reassures the general public that it remains dedicated to providing professional security services for all citizens of Sierra Leone. Upholding law and order in the country will be a top priority at all times.
