On 12th May 2026, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, announced the approval of a unified academic calendar for all accredited universities and higher education institutions across the country.

The reform, aimed at improving predictability, accountability, and efficiency in the tertiary education sector, will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic year.

According to the government, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education will coordinate with universities to finalize implementation details, while regulatory bodies will oversee compliance and may require institutions to submit annual academic schedules for review.

Under the new policy, all teaching and examinations must be completed by July 31 each year. August and September will serve as a transition and institutional planning period, while the new academic year will commence nationwide in October.

Minister Bah noted that institutions are expected to strictly adhere to the new framework, stressing that the policy is part of broader reforms to strengthen planning and accountability within the education sector.

“The government through the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education established the calendar, and institutions are expected to comply,” Minister Bah said.

He added that the reform also reflects government efforts to enhance transparency and improve communication on Cabinet-level decisions.

Some institutions are expected to request phased implementation plans to accommodate curriculum adjustments, accreditation requirements, and operational challenges during the transition period.

Officials also acknowledged potential challenges in harmonizing academic schedules, including coordination with professional examination bodies, staffing pressures, and institutional capacity constraints during the transition months.

To address these concerns, the government has indicated it will work closely with institutions to provide guidance on assessment scheduling, accreditation alignment, and smooth implementation of the new system.
