In a recent development concerning the Middle East conflict, the Sierra Leone Government has strongly condemned Iran’s attack on Israel.

The representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations addressed the Security Council, emphasizing the urgent need for de-escalation and diplomatic engagement to prevent further destabilization of the region and potential global repercussions.

During the Security Council meeting, the representative thanked UN Secretary-General His Excellency António Guterres for his briefing on the situation. The Council was presented with letters from both the Permanent Representative of Israel and Iran detailing the recent military actions.

Israel’s letter, dated 13th April 2024, reported that Iran launched over 200 UAVs, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles from its territory towards Israel. Israel labeled this attack as a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law. Conversely, Iran’s letter confirmed that they conducted military strikes on Israeli military targets late on the same day.

Reacting to these developments, the Sierra Leone representative stated that the Middle East is at a dangerous crossroads.

The escalating tension not only threatens the stability of the region but also poses a risk to global peace and security. The representative recalled Sierra Leone’s recent condemnation of the use of force in violation of international law and the UN Charter.

Sierra Leone reiterated its strong opposition to reprisal attacks that do not comply with international law. The representative emphasized that military attacks are not the solution to achieving peace. Instead, diplomatic engagement and de-escalation are crucial.

Sierra Leone called upon both Iran and Israel, as well as other involved parties, to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from using force. All parties were urged to adhere to their obligations under international law, the UN Charter, and relevant Security Council resolutions.

The representative highlighted the importance of peaceful dispute resolution and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each state. Sierra Leone also expressed concern about ongoing hostilities in the Gaza Strip and emphasized the need for the full implementation of Security Council resolutions 2712, 2720, and 2728.

Supporting the role of the United Nations in addressing global challenges, Sierra Leone expressed full support for the Secretary-General and his envoys in leading efforts towards de-escalation. The Security Council was urged to continue playing its part as envisioned by the UN Charter.

In conclusion, Sierra Leone called on states with influence over the parties involved to leverage their influence for peace and de-escalation. The representative emphasized the importance of choosing peace, security, and stability over war.
