The Judiciary of Sierra Leone has announced that it will host a court-martial military of personnel involved in the November 26 failed coup attempt today, Monday, January 8, 2024. The sitting will take place at Court No. 1, Main Law Courts Building, Freetown.

The government arrested over 80 suspects in connection with the incident, including 50 serving military officers, 5 dismissed military officers, 7 serving police officers, 1 senior retired police officer, 15 civilians, 1 correctional service officer, and Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

Last week, Dr. Koroma and 12 others were charged to court for treason and related offences.

A court-martial is a military tribunal empowered to determine the guilt of members of the armed forces subject to military law and to decide on punishment if the defendant is found guilty.

The November 26 coup attempt was quickly quashed by government forces, but it raised concerns about the stability of the West African nation, which has a long history of political unrest.

The court-martial is expected to be closely watched by Sierra Leoneans and the international community. The outcome of the trial could have a significant impact on the country’s political future.

Dr. Koroma has denied any involvement in the coup attempt and his Lawyers has accused the government of a witch-hunt. His supporters have called for his release and have vowed to challenge the charges against him in court.

The court-martial is expected to be a lengthy process. It is unclear how long it will take for a verdict to be reached.
