Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has disclosed that in 2024, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) called on member states to take concrete steps to reduce the cost of regional air travel for both airlines and passengers through the adoption of a common policy on aviation charges, taxes, and fees.
Speaking during a high-level stakeholder meeting, Dr. Sengeh confirmed that Sierra Leone has officially ratified the ECOWAS communiqué and has entered a critical phase of domestic implementation. The meeting was convened to explore how the regional recommendations can be integrated into Sierra Leonean law.
Institutions represented at the meeting included the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, the Ministry of Finance, the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, the Sierra Leone Airport Authority, and the National Revenue Authority, among others.
According to the Chief Minister, discussions focused on aligning national laws and policies with the ECOWAS framework to ease the financial burden of air travel and enhance regional connectivity.
He further noted that in recent years, Sierra Leone has experienced a significant increase in passenger volumes, alongside notable improvements in the overall travel experience, highlighting the need for sustained reforms within the aviation sector.
