As the world marked World Diabetes Day on Monday, a medical doctor at Connaught Hospital disclosed that cases of diabetes disease in the country are on the increase.

Dr. Alimu Jalloh of the department of internal medicine at Connaught hospital made this disclosure.

Dr. Jalloh said many people now carry the disease.

“Patients with diabetes in the country are very plenty,” he said.

Dr. Jalloh further state that there are two types of diabetes diseases.

Type 1 diabetes disease, he says, occurs when the body can’t produce insulin in the pancreas.
The pancreas is responsible to break down sugar in the body.

“When there is no insulin to reduce the sugar, the sugar keeps increasing in the body”, Dr.Jalloh said.

This type of diabetes disease, the doctor said, generally affects children and young people.

The second category, Type 2 diabetes disease, he said, affects mostly adults or old people; and its causes are due being o overweight, having a poor diet, and lack of exercise.

Dr. Jalloh said it can be treated with anti-diabetic medications.

He maintained that patients with diabetes tend to live longer, provided they take their treatments and refrain from sugary foods that tend to raise the sugar level in the body.

Dr. Jalloh advised people to avoid too much starchy and/or carbohydrates, and fatty foods otherwise, it will result in diabetes.

And, if the body lacks sugar, Jalloh said, it will lead to hypoglycemia – the opposite of diabetes a condition he says is even deadlier than diabetes because it kills faster.

Hypoglycemia is also referred to as low blood sugar.
