The Government of Sierra Leone has confirmed a budget support package of €13.5 million secured from the European Union (EU) under its EU Nature Nourishes Programme.

The funding, approximately Le351 million, is designed to support the country’s national development priorities, including education, food security, public service delivery, and environmental protection.

The approval follows the successful implementation of reform measures by the Sierra Leonean government, particularly in areas such as public policy strengthening, macroeconomic stability, public financial management, and domestic resource mobilisation.

The Ministry of Information and Civic Education stated that the support will contribute to key initiatives, including improving the quality of education, expanding home-grown school feeding programmes, boosting rice production, and enhancing food security.

The funding will also aid the decentralisation of public services and support efforts to curb deforestation and enhance climate resilience.

The government expressed gratitude to various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies for their role in implementing the reforms and to the Ministry of Finance for coordinating the process and ensuring the fulfilment of commitments to the European Union within the agreed timeframe.

The funding is also expected to strengthen data and monitoring systems in the education sector and enhance environmental protection efforts, particularly in the Western Area Peninsula National Park.

The European Union is considered a key development partner for Sierra Leone, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to sustainable development and long-term cooperation.
