The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the wider political community are in mourning following the announcement of the death of Honourable Bamie Chidi, affectionately known across the nation as Hon. Bami Chidee.
A formidable voice in the legislative halls and a passionate advocate for urban reform, Chidee’s passing marks the end of a career dedicated to public service and national discourse.
During his tenure as a Member of Parliament, Chidee was recognised for his active participation in legislative debates. He was often sought after for his sharp political commentary, particularly his nuanced analysis of electoral dynamics in swing districts such as Kambia and Kono. Colleagues remember him as a politician who understood the heartbeat of the Sierra Leonean electorate.
In October 2022, Hon. Chidee elevated his political profile by declaring his candidacy for the Freetown Mayoral Seat under the SLPP banner. His campaign was defined by a bold, transformative agenda aimed at modernising the capital. His primary pillars for Freetown included:
Land Reclamation: Innovative strategies to expand and protect the city’s geography.
Affordable Housing: A commitment to providing dignity through housing for low and middle-income earners.
Infrastructure Reform: A comprehensive plan to upgrade the status of Freetown to a world-class municipality.
Beyond the ballot box, Chidee was a fixture in national dialogue, known for his ability to break down complex governance issues for the general public.
”Sierra Leone has lost a passionate advocate for development and a man who truly believed in the potential of our capital city,” stated a party associate during an early tribute.
The cause of death has not been formally announced. As the nation reflects on his contributions, condolences continue to pour in for his family, friends, and the SLPP faithful. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
