Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister David J Francis has announced his country’s decision to open a consulate general in Dakhla, Morocco on Monday.

The official announced the news today in a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita in Rabat.

The new representation will bring the total count of consulates in Morocco’s Laayoune and Dakhla to 25.

Sierra Leone will also open an embassy in Rabat.

One of the latest openings came less than a month ago. After reconsidering its pro-Polisario stance on the Western Sahara conflict four years ago, Malawi opened a consulate general in Laayoune.

The position mirrors the wide support Morocco’s territorial integrity earned from a growing list of countries that have established a consulate general in southern provinces.

Sierra Leone and Morocco emphasized their shared determination to boost ties at all levels, including trade and political dialogue.

Bourita and Francis additionally signed a roadmap, which outlines the framework for multi sectoral cooperation between Morocco and Sierra Leone.

“This roadmap, which marks the ambition of the two countries to strengthen their bilateral relations, covers the fields of training and education, technical cooperation, economic promotion and investments, security and the exchange of visits,” Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained.

Morocco and Sierra Leone also discussed means to develop South-South cooperation.

The North African country has been renewing its commitment to continue to work with other African countries to face common challenges as part of South-South cooperation.

The cooperation is in line with King Mohammed VI’s vision, based on continuous multilateral dialogue, and the exchange of skills, expertise, including all of the continent’s relevant sectors.
