Sierra Leone Police seized 196 commercial motorbikes during the regular operation mounted within the Central Business District.
This was revealed during a press briefing held on Thursday 15″ December 2022 at its headquarters in Freetown. Edward Kotor Kamara, Chief Inspector of Police attached to the Traffic Division said they have staged an operation to weed out commercial motorbikes within the Centre Business District (CBD) in the nation’s capital.
He added that the morass often caused by bike riders would restrict them not to ply strategic areas in the CBD. He stated that 196 commercial motorbikes have been arrested as they remain steadfast towards the success of their operation. Kamara mentioned that the statistics for road crashes have made a dramatic increase.
“We have registered 296 fatally injured individuals for the start of this year to now”, Edward Kamara disclosed.
Brima Jah, the Director of Operations of the Sierra Leone police said they have ensured to restore proactive policing across the country for any future mayhem that may resurface.
He noted that proper operations are ongoing as a way of curtailing lawlessness and drug abuse among young people.
Mr. Jah revealed that police exist to assess threats and provide security for members of the public.
The Sierra Leone Police is on alert to ensure that there are no riots even before and after elections”, Brima Jah said.
He disclosed that they have implemented a nationwide sensitization crusade for members of the public to realize the significance of their functions and the role they played.
Brima Jah said even though police are not everywhere but the legal instrument has empowered the public to work in their footprint regardless of the situation.
In another update, Victor Manfred Williams, Commissioner of Police and Regional Commander Freetown-West said the area remains relatively calm and quiet with no spate of violence or illegal happenings.
He disclosed that a man was identified who hanged himself and was found dead in one of the bathrooms of the Church of Evangelical in Freetown.
Mr. Williams furthered that the deceased was taken to the mortuary for postmortem whiles investigations are ongoing.
Edna Silver, Head of the Community Relations Department revealed that they have continued to engage in community outreach campaigns in the bid of eradicating violence and the abuse of drugs.
She said together with the Local Policing Partnership Board and all the six divisions in the Western Area had equally mounted sensitization on non-violence lawlessness and the abuse of drugs.
Andrew Mordei, Sub-Inspector in the Southern Region said the Southern province continues to be relatively quiet and calm.
He affirmed that normal patrol has been going on in strategic areas to maintain a peaceful atmosphere for the people, in Bo and other places.
Paul Hassan Turay, Sub-Inspector in the North-West Region said the settlements remain peaceful as people are busy with their normal chores.
Mr. Turay furthered that joint security patrol has been embarked on along the Kambia and Pamalap axis to curb crime.
