A devastating fire ripped through Petter Street by Sackville Street in central Freetown on February 19, 2025, leaving hundreds homeless and four buildings severely damaged.
The blaze, which caused millions of Leones in property damage, is under investigation, though residents suspect an electrical surge following a power outage.
Sierraloaded provided live coverage from the scene as the fire raged. Witnesses reported seeing sparks from a meter and supply cable shortly after electricity was restored, immediately followed by smoke emanating from one of the buildings.
Sub-Inspector Sorie Ibrahim Mansaray, head of the Green Watch section at the National Fire Force, confirmed they received a call around 2 p.m. He stated that the sparks likely ignited flammable materials, possibly including gas stored in homes. The official cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Carew Mansaray, a victim and community stakeholder, described the devastating impact of the fire, noting its rapid spread to nearby structures. He emphasized that this was the first such incident he had witnessed in the area.
Community stakeholders praised the police and Fire Force for their efforts and urged a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire. They also stressed the need for swift rebuilding efforts as hundreds are now without shelter.
Victims are appealing to the government and non-governmental organizations for urgent assistance.
