Sierra Leone Police made a significant breakthrough in the fight against international drug trafficking with the arrest of Nigerian national Ogbonna Onyenweuwa Kevin at the Fallah Police Checkpoint.
During a routine inspection along the Bo-Taiama highway, officers seized a substantial quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine, marking a critical step in the nation’s efforts to curb drug smuggling.
The operation, led by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Brima Kanneh, highlighted the growing use of Sierra Leone as a transit hub for international drug syndicates. Initial investigations suggest that Kevin was en route to Liberia, with plans to move the narcotics to Nigeria. The suspect remains in custody as the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) expands its investigation to uncover the network behind the smuggling operation.
Detective Police Constable Patrick Mohamed Ngobeh, whose sharp instincts led to the bust, was instrumental in the operation. He received support from Corporal Kanu and worked under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Kadie Munu, who has been praised for maintaining rigorous search procedures at the checkpoint.
AIG Kanneh commended the officers’ efforts and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, emphasizing the collective responsibility in combating drug trafficking. TOCU is determined to dismantle the syndicate involved, reinforcing the police’s commitment to safeguarding Sierra Leone from the dangers of illegal narcotics.
