Impeccable sources from Police Headquarters have disclosed that advertisements for promotions within the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) are expected to be published following the commencement of salary payments for newly introduced ranks at the end of April 2025.

According to the sources, the Executive Management Board and the Police Council had put a hold on promotions due to delays in the approval of salaries for the new ranks introduced during the 2021 mass promotions.

The sources further revealed that, after a series of extensive engagements with the government, the SLP received official communication from the Ministry of Finance last month, confirming that salary payments for the new ranks will begin at the end of April 2025.

It will be recalled that in numerous engagements with personnel, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), William Fayia Sellu, consistently cited the lack of an approved salary scale for the new ranks as the main obstacle to promotions.

“Now that payment of salaries for the new ranks is scheduled to start at the end of this April, we expect that advertisements for promotions will soon follow,” the source added.

The public may recall that in 2021, the SLP reintroduced several ranks including Corporal, Sergeant Major, Sub-Inspector, Chief Inspector, Assistant Commissioner, and Commissioner, resulting in the promotion of over 4,000 officers across various levels.

Meanwhile, during his nationwide awareness campaign on the SLP’s transformation from a Force to a Service, the IGP confirmed that the government has also approved the recruitment of 1,000 new personnel in 2025.

He stated that the recruitment will be carried out in two phases, with 500 officers to be recruited in each phase. Advertisements for recruitment are also expected to be announced soon.
