The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) announced an upcoming increase in service tariffs through an internal memorandum today.

The document cites thorough discussions and consultations with stakeholders, including the SLRSA Board and relevant government bodies, as the impetus for the increment. All parties reportedly agreed that a tariff increase is necessary to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the SLRSA’s operations.

The new tariff structure, carefully designed to reflect current economic realities, will take effect on Monday, April 22nd, 2024. This adjustment aims to ensure the SLRSA’s ability to continue providing high-quality services to the public.

Established by an Act of Parliament in 1996 as the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority (S.L.R.T.A), the SLRSA is the lead agency tasked with road safety management in Sierra Leone. Its core responsibilities include issuing licenses for both vehicles and individuals, regulating the road transport sector, and promoting road safety initiatives.

In 2014, the Sierra Leone Parliament passed the Sierra Leone Road Safety Act, replacing the S.L.R.T.A Act. This rebranding streamlined the agency’s focus on effective road safety management while preserving its original functions related to vehicle licensing and road safety enforcement. The change aligns with global priorities outlined in the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020), which emphasizes a stronger commitment to road safety management practices.
