The government of Sierra Leone, through the National Public Health Agency, has confirmed the second death from mpox disease in the country.
The announcement was made on Monday, March 17, 2025, following the first reported death on March 7, 2025.
Currently, the total number of confirmed mpox cases has reached 107, which includes 69 active cases, 2 new cases, and 36 recoveries. The death toll remains at 2, with Freetown reporting the highest concentration of confirmed cases, totaling 79.
In response to the ongoing situation, a public health emergency was declared for mpox on January 16, 2025, aimed at rapidly containing the outbreak and safeguarding public health.
Mpox is a viral disease caused by an orthopoxvirus, primarily spreading through close contact with infected individuals. Symptoms include a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, and fever, and in severe cases, the disease can be fatal.
