Sierra Leone, in its role as current ECOWAS Chair, is spearheading West Africa’s preparations for the COP30 climate summit by chairing the West Africa Regional Preparatory Workshop in Dakar, Senegal.
The meeting, which brings together regional climate stakeholders, is focused on pressing concerns ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
Day one featured in-depth discussions on climate risks, adaptation capacity, and takeaways from the recent UN Climate Change Conference (SB62). Delegates also advanced negotiations on Article 6, which addresses market and non-market approaches to enhance climate action.
Participants stressed that adaptation is a necessity for West African nations facing mounting climate risks, highlighting the urgent need for predictable and accessible financing to address loss and damage.
The workshop also emphasized the importance of a Just Transition built on equity and inclusivity, ensuring no community is left behind in the shift toward sustainability.
The overarching message was clear: West Africa must present a united front at COP30 to strengthen regional resilience and collective climate action.
