The National Union of Sierra Leonean Students in the Russian Federation (NUSS-RF) is calling on the Sierra Leonean government to immediately address the issue of delayed stipend payments to students studying in Russia.

In a press release issued yesterday, the NUSS-RF expressed deep disappointment and frustration, stating that students have not received their annual stipends since the academic year began last September.

“Despite repeated assurances, students are struggling to meet their basic needs, including accommodation, food, and medical care,” the statement reads. “This delay has caused undue suffering and jeopardized their academic pursuits.”

The stipend program is a cornerstone of the government’s commitment to supporting higher education and human capital development in Sierra Leone. The NUSS-RF emphasizes that the delays have resulted in students facing challenges like starvation and difficulty affording housing.

“We have held numerous meetings and sent countless letters to the authorities in charge of student welfare,” the statement continues. “However, to date, we have received no positive response, and the academic year is nearing its end.”

The NUSS-RF is demanding immediate action from the government to ensure timely disbursement of stipends. They have warned of further actions, including media campaigns and peaceful protests, if the issue remains unresolved.
