Eighty-eight Sierra Leoneans who were deported from Mauritania arrived in Freetown on April 14, 2025.

Upon arrival, they were received by relevant authorities and taken through a series of medical examinations organized by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

The health screenings were carried out to check the physical and mental condition of the returnees before they move back into their communities. Medical teams were on standby at the arrival point to carry out the assessments, which included routine checks and monitoring for any signs of illness or infection.

Officials from the Ministry of Health stated that this process helps ensure that the returnees are fit to go back to their normal lives and to prevent the possible spread of communicable diseases.

This return comes as part of ongoing cooperation between Sierra Leone and countries in the region regarding the repatriation of citizens found to be residing without legal status abroad.
