The Sierra Leonean music industry is in mourning following the tragic death of renowned musician, Lansana Sheriff, popularly known as “Steady Bongo.” The musician passed away on Saturday, December 7th, 2024, after a fatal road accident.

Steady Bongo was more than just a musician; he was a cultural icon and a beacon of hope for the nation’s youth. His music, often infused with educational messages, entertained and inspired countless individuals. His contributions to national development through music and edutainment earned him recognition and respect from government agencies.

Following the heartbreaking news, a wave of tributes poured in from fellow musicians, government officials, and fans alike.

The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “Steady Bongo was a valued partner who used his artistry to unite communities and leave a lasting legacy.”

Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “A legend is gone. He cut across and brought joy to countless lives across Sierra Leone. My favorite #Salone artist. Rest well my friend and brother.”

Fellow musician Famous paid tribute, saying, “To Steady Bongo, thank you for the music, the memories, and the legacy. Your melodies will forever echo through the hills and valleys of Sierra Leone.”

Ambassador of Entertainment, Kao Denero, emphasized the immense loss to the nation’s entertainment industry. He called on the industry to unite and honor Steady Bongo’s legacy with a befitting burial.

“The tragic news of his passing, following injuries sustained in a fatal accident, is a great loss to our nation. Steady Bongo was not just a musician; he was a top-notch artist, a pioneer, and an elder whose contributions shaped the foundation of Sierra Leone’s entertainment industry. Ilis talent, passion, and dedication will forever remain in our hearts and inspire generations to come.

“I call on all entertainers, both at home and abroad, to unite in solidarity with the family of our beloved Steady Bongo. Let us come together to give him a befitting burial and pay him the final respects he deserves. This is not only a time to mourn but also a moment to honor his legacy and celebrate the extraordinary life he lived.”

Government officials and opposition leaders also expressed their condolences. Kandeh Yumkella, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy & Food Security, described Steady Bongo as a “great cultural icon & a true patriot.”

Samura Kamara, the Flagbearer of the All Peoples’ Congress (APC) party, acknowledged the musician’s impact on the nation’s music scene. “It’s sad to lose a music icon in Sierra Leone, Lansana Sheriff aka Steady Bongo, so loved by all music lovers in the country. His songs were so tangible across the country. My people in Kamalo, in particular, will sorely miss the many times Steady Bongo performed for them with songs of hope and happiness. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”  Kamara wrote.
