Sierra Leone’s Transport and Aviation Minister and Board Chairman of the Regional Maritime University (RMU), Ambassador Col. Rtd. Alhaji Fanday Turay, has officially inaugurated the 32nd RMU Board of Governors meeting, highlighting the critical role of the university in developing maritime expertise across West Africa.

In his opening address, Ambassador Turay extended gratitude to the Government of Liberia for hosting the event and conveyed warm regards from Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, recognizing Liberia’s enduring support for maritime education in the region. Ambassador Turay commended RMU as a “center of excellence in maritime studies,” lauding its influence in advancing regional maritime operations and producing skilled professionals.

Ambassador Turay underscored his commitment to advancing RMU’s infrastructure and technological capabilities to align with global educational standards. His strategic vision includes increasing student enrollment, boosting revenue through diversified streams, and expanding online learning programs to improve access to RMU’s offerings across West Africa.

The gathering convened transportation ministers and key stakeholders from RMU’s member states, with discussions focused on policy review, strategic planning, and assessing the university’s ongoing efforts to meet the maritime sector’s evolving demands. As RMU pursues these new objectives, Ambassador Turay reaffirmed his dedication to fostering regional cooperation and ensuring the university’s continued impact on West Africa’s maritime industry.
