The SLAJ Annual National Media Awards 2024/25 took place on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown.
The event brought together journalists, media professionals, and stakeholders to celebrate the best of Sierra Leonean journalism.
Several awards were presented to journalists who excelled in their respective fields. Alfred Koroma of Concord Times won in two categories, Outstanding Reporting on the Economy and Outstanding Reporting on Agriculture. Kemo Cham from Mano Reporters received the award for Outstanding Reporting on Health, while Nasratu Karbgo from Politico was recognized for her work on Arts, Culture, and Tourism.
Zainab Sunkary Koroma was honored with the Olu Awoonor Gordon Award for Best Investigative Reporting for her story on human trafficking. AYV Media’s Victor Eustace Jones took home the award for Outstanding Report on the Environment, covering illegal construction on Freetown’s hilltops. Joseph Johnson from AYV Media won the Outstanding Feature Story category.
Other winners included Ishmail Saidu Kanu from Tribune Times, who received both the Sam Metzger Award for Best Political Reporting and the award for Outstanding Reporting on Sports. Christian A. Conteh from Awoko Newspaper won for Outstanding Reporting on Gender, and Zainab Joaqué was named the UNDP Outstanding Journalist of the Year for her consistent coverage of economic issues.
In the non-competitive categories, Phebean Swill of AYV was named Outstanding TV Presenter of the Year, while Salmata Bah of SLBC was awarded Outstanding Radio Presenter of the Year. Alfred Koroma also won Outstanding Print Media Journalist of the Year, and Kemo Cham of Mano Press was recognized as Outstanding Digital Journalist of the Year.
The awards served as a platform to recognize the hard work and dedication of journalists in Sierra Leone, celebrating their contributions to informing and engaging the public.
