The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) held an orientation program on Thursday, July 4, 2025, for its newly elected national and regional executive members.

The event in Kenema City aimed to prepare the officials for their three-year term following the recent SLAJ elections.

Outgoing SLAJ President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla underscored the significance of the orientation, a tradition initiated by former president Kelvin Lewis. Nasralla stated that the program is crucial for a smooth transition, promoting unity and clarity among elected members for a successful tenure.

Constitutional lawyer Joseph Kapuwa Esq. provided an in-depth review of the SLAJ constitution, detailing the responsibilities of the new leaders. He emphasized the importance of collective leadership, mutual support, and accountability, and outlined disciplinary measures, including grounds for removal due to misconduct.

Veteran journalist Umaru Fofana offered motivational insights from his long career. He encouraged the new leadership, stating, “The road to success is rough, but with courage, honesty, commitment, and sacrifice, you can lead SLAJ to greater heights.” Fofana also urged members to embrace versatility and adapt to digital media practices to maintain relevance.

In his farewell address, Nasralla congratulated the incoming officials and expressed gratitude to his outgoing executive. He advised the new team to avoid corruption and uphold the association’s values, also thanking past presidents and stakeholders for their support during his administration.

President-elect Alhaji Manika Kamara reiterated his commitment to transparent and fair leadership within SLAJ. He also announced that the SLAJ electoral body, SLAJEC, will soon release the schedule for upcoming by-elections in the Southern Region.

This orientation serves as a key step for the new executive members as they begin their term under new leadership.
