The Sierra Leone Association of Women in Journalism (SLAWIJ) successfully held its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 30th, marking a significant milestone in its three-year history.

The AGM featured a range of activities, including the adoption of resolutions, panel discussions, a question-and-answer session, and the election of new executives. Millicent Kargbo was elected President, defeating Hannah K Williams in a closely contested vote. Aminata Finda Massaquoi was elected Director of Programs unopposed, while Abibatu Kamara, Martha Kargbo, and regional coordinators were also elected to their respective positions.

In her address, outgoing President Millicent Kargbo highlighted the challenges and opportunities facing women in journalism today. While the number of women in the field has increased, many continue to leave due to limited growth and development opportunities. She emphasized the need for a more supportive media landscape to retain and nurture female talent.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Miriam Conteh Morgan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, delivered a powerful speech on the 3 V’s: Voice, Visibility, and Viability. Her message resonated with the audience, emphasizing the importance of women in journalism amplifying their voices and increasing their visibility.

The AGM concluded with a celebration of the successful election process and the promising future of SLAWIJ under the leadership of the newly elected executives.
