The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), has issued an official press release emphasizing the mandatory registration of all Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones in the country.

In the statement, the SLCAA stresses that all drone owners and operators must ensure their drones are registered with the Authority and obtain the appropriate licenses or permissions to operate them within Sierra Leonean airspace.

According to the release, drone operators are required to submit an application containing specific details, including the operator’s name, address, telephone number, the location of the proposed operation, the date, time, and duration of the operation, as well as the maximum height Above Ground Level (AGL) for the drone’s flight.

The Authority has outlined clear guidelines to facilitate compliance, urging drone owners to reach out to SLCAA headquarters at 21/23 Siaka Stevens Street, Freetown, or through the provided contact email, [email protected].

The SLCAA warns that failure to adhere to these regulations could result in confiscation of drones or prosecution by the police. In a bid to protect sensitive areas, the Authority has also reiterated the existence of No-Fly zones across the country.

These restricted areas include the residences and offices of the President and Vice President, government offices, military barracks, and all airports and airstrips. Special permission must be obtained before flying drones in or around these zones.

This move comes as part of the government’s efforts to regulate the growing use of UAVs, ensuring public safety and national security, while providing clear operational guidelines for drone enthusiasts and professionals alike.
