The Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC) has expressed strong solidarity with the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) as they prepare to embark on a nationwide strike scheduled for September 8, 2025.
The strike, initiated by the SLTU, is in response to unresolved issues with the government that have persisted since November 2024.
In a press release issued on August 8, 2025, the SLLC criticized the government’s failure to address the teachers’ demands, despite its commitments to the flagship Free Quality Education program.
The organization underscored the urgency of resolving these issues to enable the reopening of schools and to support efforts aimed at improving teachers’ welfare and education delivery across the country.
While acknowledging ongoing negotiations between the government and the SLTU, the SLLC expressed concern that critical demands by the teachers remain unaddressed at a pivotal time for Sierra Leone’s education sector. The organization called on the government to act swiftly to find a resolution, highlighting the importance of prioritizing education for the nation’s children.
