The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has issued a press release urging political parties seeking police security for public meetings to adhere to the established protocols that aligns with the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) Act.
The statement comes amid reports of individuals from various political parties requesting police protection without the necessary prior notification to their respective party secretariats.
According to the SLP, all requests for police security must originate from the party secretariat and be submitted with a minimum of three days’ notice.
The requirement aligns with the responsibilities outlined in the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) Act, which mandates that political activities should not conflict with existing regulations.
“The SLP remains dedicated to safeguarding the democratic process through the enforcement of lawful and orderly conduct,” the release stated. It highlighted the importance of conducting meetings at designated venues, explicitly stating that gatherings must not occur as street rallies.
Furthermore, the police emphasized their commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. They urged political parties to cooperate fully with those guidelines to promote peace and national stability.
The Sierra Leone Police expressed appreciation for the understanding and continued cooperation of all political parties, indicating their intention to foster a peaceful and secure political environment throughout the country.
