The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has announced a ban on all political campaigns for the party’s flagbearer position.
The ban applies to all party members with leadership ambitions, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Moses Mambu, said in a recent interview.
Mambu stated that no member currently has the authority to officially declare their intention to run for the flagbearer position. He explained that this ban is in place until further notice and applies to every party member who has such aspirations. The ban, however, does not extend to supporters or sympathizers outside the party.
He added that even if someone is close to important party members, including the president, that does not give them the right to speak or act officially for the party when it comes to declaring a run for flagbearer.
As the official voice of the SLPP, Mambu clarified that no one is permitted to call a press conference or make an official announcement about running for the flagbearer position at this time.
Mambu also noted that while the party cannot control what is shared on social media such as flyers or posts supporting potential candidates, these actions are not officially recognized or supported by the SLPP.
The National Publicity Secretary said his office will continue to remind party members and supporters about the importance of unity within the party. He said his office will always continue to admonish the party’s membership and sympathizers, reminding them that the SLPP is “One Country, One People” and “One People, One Country.”
