Press freedom is under threat in Kono District as the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Chairman, Sahrfea Leslie Moiwa, has allegedly threatened to mobilize hoodlums to physically assault a journalist.
The journalist, whose name remains undisclosed for security reasons, had replayed an audio clip of President Julius Maada Bio’s campaign promises to the people of Kono, highlighting unfulfilled commitments made during the 2023 elections.
The threat, which has sparked outrage among media professionals and civil society organizations, is seen as an attack on free speech and democracy. Moiwa reportedly expressed his displeasure over the broadcast and hinted at using violence as a means to silence the journalist.
Media rights groups have condemned the alleged threat, calling on authorities to ensure the safety of journalists in the district. “Press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, and any attempt to intimidate or attack journalists must be condemned in the strongest terms,” a spokesperson for the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) stated.
Meanwhile, President Bio has previously assured the nation of his commitment to media freedom, but incidents like this raise concerns over the safety of journalists who hold public officials accountable. Calls are mounting for law enforcement agencies to investigate the threats and take necessary action to prevent any act of violence against the press.
The journalist in question has not made a public statement but is reportedly taking security precautions. This development serves as a test of the government’s commitment to protecting press freedom and upholding democratic values in Sierra Leone.
