Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr David Moinina Sengeh, has been honoured with a Service Award by the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in recognition of his long-standing dedication and contributions to the party and national development.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Dr Sengeh described the occasion as a memorable evening with family, friends, and colleagues, and expressed gratitude to the SLPP for the honour. He reflected on his upbringing in a family deeply committed to public service, noting that several generations of his relatives have served their communities and country as imams, chiefs, lay readers, teachers, public servants, and NGO workers.
He also highlighted his family’s historical ties to the SLPP, recalling that his parents endured physical abuse in Pujehun due to their unwavering support for the party. Dr Sengeh described the SLPP as a progressive social democratic party and said it remains the only political party he has known, served, and contributed to throughout his life.
Speaking on his personal journey within the party, the Chief Minister said he has participated in SLPP street rallies in Freetown since 2007. He disclosed that he contributed to the party’s manifesto development in 2018 and 2023 and served as Chair of the Independent Elections Management Committee during the SLPP’s 2021 National Convention. He noted that under his leadership, the convention conducted the party’s first open and televised internal elections, which concluded without petitions.
Dr Sengeh further stated that he currently serves as Chairman of the SLPP Constitution Review Committee. Over the years, he has held several senior positions in SLPP-led governments, including Chief Innovation Officer, Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, and Chief Minister.
At the ceremony, President Julius Maada Bio, Leader of the SLPP, paid tribute to loyal party members, stating: “And let us honour our men as well as the pillars, the organisers, the strategists, and the loyal defenders who have stood firm in every season.”
In his response, Dr Sengeh said he believes strongly in loyalty, describing it as one guided by shared vision, mission, and purpose rather than blind allegiance.
