The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has announced a series of new operational directives and public engagement initiatives aimed at bolstering road safety and improving service delivery across the country, with a key focus on ensuring all vehicles are equipped with a first aid kit.
According to SLRSA the directive aligned with Regulation 55 (6) of the Road Traffic Regulation 2011, mandates that all vehicles operating in Sierra Leone must now carry essential safety equipment, including a First Aid Kit. The SLRSA emphasized that this measure is crucial for providing immediate assistance in the event of road accidents and will be strictly enforced.
In addition to this mandatory safety equipment, the SLRSA is also introducing a Mobile Work Station to enhance service delivery by bringing the Authority directly to communities. This initiative aims to improve efficiency and accessibility for the public in addressing road safety concerns.
Furthermore, the SLRSA has activated a Toll-Free Line, 844 , providing a 24/7 channel for citizens to report accidents, abandoned vehicles, breakdowns, and other traffic-related issues.
The Authority also reiterated existing regulations regarding vehicle registration and breakdown procedures. Driving an unregistered and unlicensed vehicle remains illegal, with defaulters facing fines and mandatory registration. Impounded vehicles left unclaimed for six months will be forfeited to the state.
Additionally, drivers of breakdown vehicles are reminded of their legal obligation to place reflective triangles, with failure to do so resulting in towing at the owner’s expense.
The SLRSA urges all road users to comply with all traffic laws and regulations, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in creating a safer transportation environment for everyone in Sierra Leone.
