Residents of Makeni City are facing a temporary disruption in their water supply following a significant act of vandalism at the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) infrastructure.
In a public notice issued on Monday, January 26, SALWACO Management confirmed that the outage stems from a break-in at the water intake plant in Konsho.
The incident occurred during the night of January 25, 2026.
According to the company, unknown individuals unlawfully removed over 240 meters of armored electrical cables. The stolen equipment—comprising cables of 240 mm², 150 mm², and 70 mm² sizes—is vital for connecting the facility’s transformer to its raw water pumps and control panels. As a result, the plant has been rendered completely inoperable.
Restoration Efforts and Public Appeal SALWACO has assured the public that urgent efforts are already underway to replace the damaged infrastructure and restore services “within the shortest possible time.”
The utility provider strongly condemned the sabotage, noting that such acts directly threaten essential service delivery and community well-being. SALWACO is appealing to the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities near water facilities to the relevant authorities.
Management expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the residents of Makeni and requested patience as technical teams work to resolve the crisis.
