A student at SLC Government Secondary School in Makeni district reportedly began convulsing during an agricultural class today, leading to chaos and panic as she allegedly bit a teacher who was attempting to assist her.
Other pupils also fell ill, prompting an emergency response that saw between five and ten individuals rushed to Makeni Government Hospital, according to school authorities.
The cause of the incident remains unclear, but Osman Kamara, Information Officer for the Makeni Division of the Sierra Leone Police, indicated that the convulsions were attributed by some witnesses to an alleged “demonic act.”
“The affected student is a Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 pupil. We are yet to speak with her parents or school authorities to determine what triggered the incident,” Kamara stated. He added that further panic ensued as other students reportedly fainted in the congested classroom environment.
No fatalities have been reported thus far. However, Kamara emphasized that investigations are on-going, with the school’s principal cooperating with police to provide additional details.
In response to the situation, all students were sent home while only police officers and school authorities remain on-site. Kamara assured the public that the situation is under control.
Reports from eyewitnesses suggest that several students are still experiencing symptoms of fainting and distress. The school has urged calm and advised students and parents to resume their daily activities, while medical personnel continue monitoring the affected individuals at the hospital.
