The Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) has issued a formal reminder to the government regarding unpaid school fee subsidies, warning of accumulating backlogs as the academic term draws to a close.
In a letter dated December 8, 2025, addressed to the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), SLTU Secretary General Morris S. Conteh expressed deep concern over the delay in releasing funds for the first term of the 2025/2026 school year.
The letter highlights that the payment of these subsidies—along with the backlog from the 2024/2025 academic year—was a key resolution reached following the last teachers’ strike action.
“It is disturbing that the 1st term fees subsidies have still not been paid in spite of assurances from your Ministry and the Ministry of Finance,” Conteh stated in the correspondence.
The Union emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that schools are scheduled to close for the Christmas holidays within the next two weeks. The SLTU warned that failing to clear these payments before the break would result in “another backlog of fees subsidies,” further complicating the financial situation for schools.
The letter was copied to key government officials, including the Vice President, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, urging prompt intervention to resolve the impasse.
