The Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Professor Alpha Tejan Wurle has informed newsmen that they have had a consultation with the Vice Chancellor and Principles of public tertiary institutions and agreed that all applicants with university requirements must go through assessment examination.

He said the assessment examination will be through a written multiple choice questions that they have introduced in all the public universities in the country, as a new approach in getting effective and quality education.

He said the call for assessment came 2022 came after they saw the 2022 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) result with a total of 58 percent passes as against the 3 percent in 2018.

He added that out of the 186,695 pupils that took the WASSCE exams, 108,418 had five subjects with both English and Maths.

He said they were also going to re introduce a preliminary year for students pursuing Main Steam programmes, and that colleges should endeavor to start a one year foundation courses in Science and Technology for those that may not be successful from the above screening process.

He further said that students will gain access into year one of the relevant discipline degree program after successful completion of diploma program that may not have the full requirement to enroll into year one.

Professor Wurrie added that the Ministry of Technology and Higher education in collaboration with Orange Sierra Leone have provided a platform that enables students to access university PIN for online application.

He said all University of Sierra Leone campuses will re-open on October 15 2022 as the commencement date for the 2022/23 academic year..
