A lavish engagement party held on November 29, 2024, for Agnes Bio, daughter of Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, and her partner, Jos Leijdekkers, has come under intense scrutiny.

The event featured performances by two of Africa’s biggest Afrobeat stars, Tiwa Savage and Ayra Starr, who were reportedly flown in from Nigeria on private jets.

Opposition politician Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray alleged that the artists were each paid $100,000 for the private gig. The appearance of such high-profile performers at the event has raised eyebrows, particularly given Leijdekkers’s background.

Leijdekkers, identified as a convicted Dutch cocaine kingpin, is reportedly wanted in the Netherlands for drug smuggling and other serious crimes. His presence in Sierra Leone and his relationship with Agnes Bio have sparked controversy and raised questions about potential high-level connections to organized crime.

The engagement party, which took place a week after Agnes Bio’s birthday, further fuels the controversy surrounding the couple. Video footage from the event, which quickly went viral, shows Tiwa Savage and Ayra Starr performing together.

The high cost of booking such prominent artists for a private event has prompted inquiries into the source of the funds. Attendees at the party reportedly included Isaac Bayoh and Shaekou Allieu, both members of Sierra Leone’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, as well as Agnes’s mother, Zainab Kandeh.

The timing of the engagement party and the lavish spending associated with it have drawn increased attention to Leijdekkers’s activities in Sierra Leone and the nature of his relationship with the President’s daughter.

While there is no suggestion that Agnes Bio is involved in any illegal activity, the circumstances surrounding the engagement party and Leijdekkers’s presence in the country continue to raise concerns.
