As part of the year-long domestic tourism campaign, Nabeela Tunis, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, conducted a surprise visit to Sierra Leone’s oldest market, the historic Big Market.
Accompanied by her Deputy, Khadijatu Grace Kamara, and a team of officials, Minister Tunis explored the vibrant market, which dates back to the 18th Century.
Sierra Leone Big Market, situated at Wallace Johnson in Freetown, stands as the country’s largest artisan market, boasting a rich collection of arts and crafts. From intricately carved wooden pieces, drums, and jewelry to paintings and locally made textiles like shukublai, the market offers a diverse array of handmade products.
During the visit, Minister Tunis expressed that the purpose was to promote domestic tourism by showcasing the unique offerings of Big Market. She commended local artisans for their exceptional use of locally sourced materials. The minister emphasized the significance of the visit, aligning it with the January theme, “Explore and Discover,” encouraging more people to visit and discover such cultural gems.
Accompanying Minister Tunis were key figures in the tourism sector, including her Deputy, the Director of Culture, the Administrative Manager of the Monument and Relics Commission, and the Ag. Senior Assistant Secretary.
The traders at Big Market warmly welcomed the minister’s visit, viewing it as an opportunity not only to exhibit their merchandise but also to actively engage in the year-long “Tourism for All” campaign. Minister Tunis’s presence served to further encourage the local community to embrace and participate in the flourishing domestic tourism initiative.
