Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister and Chief Innovation Officer, Moinina David Sengeh, delivered a landmark address at the AI Forum in Dubai today, unveiling a series of staggering statistics that signal a digital revolution in the West African nation.
Under the banner of the WeAreDelivering campaign, Sengeh presented data showing that Sierra Leone has effectively closed the digital divide in key areas over the last five years. Highlighting a “connectivity transformation,” the Chief Minister revealed that the capital city, Freetown, has achieved 100% open stand-alone 5G coverage.
The data shared by Sengeh suggests a comprehensive upgrade to the country’s mobile and satellite networks. Key milestones included: Mobile Connectivity: Achieving 100% 3G and 92% 4G coverage nationwide.
The implementation of 100% satellite internet capabilities to ensure even the most remote areas are connected, and the completion of a nationwide fiber network connecting all districts.
Educational institutions have been primary beneficiaries of this rollout. Sengeh confirmed that all 13 universities and 26 campuses across the country are now fully equipped with internet access, providing a foundation for the next generation of Sierra Leonean innovators to compete in the global AI economy.
“Together, we are delivering for our citizens,” Sengeh stated, emphasizing that these technological strides are not just about speed, but about creating an equitable future for all Sierra Leoneans.
