The United States government has officially handed over the ECOWAS Logistics Training Depot to the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), marking a significant milestone in regional security cooperation.

Since its establishment in 2002, the Depot has played a crucial role in training and equipping over 1,652 soldiers from 15 African nations. It has been instrumental in supporting peacekeeping missions in Sudan, Somalia, and Liberia.

As part of the handover, the US provided the RSLAF with vital equipment, including 194 vehicles and over 29,000 pieces of communication gear, to enhance the country’s security and peacekeeping capabilities.

US Ambassador Hunt emphasized the importance of this donation in bolstering Sierra Leone’s security and democratic institutions. “This donation has the potential to assist the RSLAF in securing Sierra Leone’s territorial integrity, helping the Sierra Leone Police with internal security, and defending Sierra Leone’s constitution and democracy. With over 200 RSLAF personnel trained in logistics and operational management, this transition ensures the Depot will continue to serve as a cornerstone for national and regional stability.” he said.

The Depot is one of two approved ECOWAS military facilities designed to facilitate joint military operations, stockpile resources, and enable the rapid deployment of ECOWAS Standby Forces (ESF) during regional crises.

The handover comes as Sierra Leone prepares to host a 1,200-strong peacekeeping force authorized by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This force, part of the ECOWAS Counter-Terrorism Force (CTForce), aims to stabilize the country and prevent unconstitutional regimes.
