Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Dean of the African Group of Ambassadors, Rashid Sesay, delivered the keynote address at the 2025 Africa Day commemoration, marking 62 years since the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU).
Held under the theme “Revisiting Our History, Shaping Our Future,” the event aligned with the AU’s 2025 focus: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.” The discussions emphasized confronting historical injustices, including colonialism, the transatlantic slave trade, and ongoing global inequalities.
Ambassador Sesay highlighted Africa Day’s significance in promoting unity, freedom, and solidarity across the continent. He described the occasion as an opportunity to celebrate Africa’s heritage while reflecting on future challenges in achieving peace, justice, and development.
He also underscored Africa’s economic potential, citing its growing population, expanding middle class, and thriving entrepreneurial hubs. With abundant natural resources—including lithium, cobalt, and copper—Africa is poised to play a key role in the global energy transition, Sesay noted.
“Africa is a continent of immense opportunities—stability is rising, governance is improving, and reforms are flourishing,” he said. “It’s time to move beyond outdated narratives and recognize Africa as a vibrant, rising continent shaping its own destiny.”
The ambassador further praised strengthening ties between African nations and the UAE, citing increased trade, renewable energy partnerships, and cultural exchanges. He expressed optimism about future collaboration.
The event, attended by UAE officials, diplomats, business leaders, and members of the African diaspora, concluded with cultural performances showcasing the continent’s diversity.
