United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has lauded President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone for his pivotal role in advancing the discussion on United Nations Security Council reform.

During a recent bilateral meeting, Guterres commended President Bio’s leadership and highlighted the significant progress made in addressing Africa’s long-standing underrepresentation on the Council.

Guterres expressed strong support for enhancing Africa’s representation, acknowledging the continent’s historical marginalization in global decision-making processes. He noted the positive feedback from Security Council members on the necessity of reform and praised the constructive debate led by President Bio.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations on the notable success achieved in the recent debate,” Guterres remarked. “Your advocacy for a more inclusive Security Council and your contributions to peace efforts in the Sahel are commendable.”

In response, President Bio expressed gratitude for the Secretary-General’s steadfast support and urged the international community to fulfill its commitments toward reform. He also addressed the escalating security challenges in the Sahel region, calling for sustained international focus and action.

Your support has been invaluable, and your stand against the injustices within the Security Council’s structure is deeply appreciated,” President Bio stated. “I remain committed to advocating for peace and stability, particularly in the Sahel, and I call on all nations to work together in addressing these pressing issues.”
