The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sierra Leone teamed up with the National Youth Commission (NYC) Sierra Leone to shine a spotlight on the inspiring journey of 80 young women defying gender norms.
These determined individuals are actively challenging stereotypes by pursuing skills training in traditionally male-dominated trades at the Armed Forces Technical & Educational College.
The initiative, aimed at fostering empowerment and enhancing employability, underscores the commitment of UNDP and NYC to promoting inclusivity and breaking down barriers that hinder the full participation of women in various sectors. The Armed Forces Technical & Educational College serves as a platform for these young women to acquire valuable skills in trades that have historically been dominated by men.
The collaboration seeks not only to impart technical proficiency but also to instill confidence in the participants, encouraging them to embrace their roles as trailblazers in non-traditional career paths. By challenging conventional norms, these 80 young women are not only acquiring skills that empower them economically but are also contributing to reshaping societal perceptions about gender roles.
UNDP and NYC expressed pride in supporting this transformative endeavor, recognizing the importance of fostering a more inclusive and diverse workforce. The partnership reflects a broader commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by ensuring equal opportunities for all, irrespective of gender.
As the initiative gains momentum, it stands as a testament to the potential for positive change when organizations come together to champion the empowerment of youth, particularly young women, in breaking through barriers and forging new paths towards a more equitable future.
