Students at the University of Makeni (UNIMAK) are set to welcome Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, former Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, as the Distinguished Guest of Honor for a special fundraising lunch and groundbreaking ceremony in October 2024.
The event marks the start of a major project to construct a Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Office and a Students’ Resource Center, both part of the “SRC We Want” manifesto.
The announcement was officially confirmed by Hon. Tunis on September 24, 2024, during a meeting with SRC President Edmond Alim B. Fornah.
Hon. Tunis graciously accepted the invitation to attend and support the project, expressing his enthusiasm for initiatives that promote education and sustainable development.
“Without education, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Hon. Tunis, emphasizing the critical importance of the project to students’ academic and leadership growth.
The SRC Office and Resource Center initiative, spearheaded by President Fornah, is designed to enhance student governance and academic enrichment at UNIMAK.
The SRC Office will serve as a hub for student leadership, providing a platform for students to address concerns, represent their interests, and engage in university decision-making processes.
The Students’ Resource Center will offer essential facilities such as printing equipment, internet access, and a range of academic resources to support research and learning activities.
Fornah expressed his gratitude to Hon. Tunis for his ongoing contributions to Sierra Leone’s development and his commitment to supporting student welfare.
“Having such a prominent national figure involved is a major boost to our efforts to improve student welfare and create better learning opportunities,” Fornah stated.
In addition to serving as the Guest of Honor, Hon. Tunis has pledged a personal donation toward the construction of the new facility. His support underscores his dedication to education as a cornerstone for development and highlights the significance of this project for the UNIMAK community.
The groundbreaking ceremony is expected to be a transformative moment for students at UNIMAK, marking the beginning of a new era in student leadership and academic support.
