United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan Hunt has called on the All People’s Congress (APC) party to play a crucial role in supporting the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact.

In an interview with Radio Democracy, Ambassador Hunt emphasized the importance of the opposition party’s engagement in the ratification and implementation of the compact.

“The opposition is going to need to decide whether or not they are going to support the compact in parliament,” Ambassador Hunt stated. “They have a very significant role here in ratifying the compact as well as passing legislative judgement necessary to push the compact forward.”

He added that the APC party can play a vital role in the power sector reforms required as preconditions for the compact, which include both legislative actions and public support. Additionally, the opposition has a key role in the implementation recommendations of the tripartite committee and the agreements of the national unity government.

Ambassador Hunt expressed hope for the APC’s continued engagement and leadership in ensuring the government delivers on transparent, inclusive, and institutional reforms. He cautioned that a failure to support the process could negatively impact the MCC compact and the country’s progress.

He further expressed confidence that both the government and the opposition are committed to democratic reforms and will work together to move forward with the reforms agenda for the benefit of Sierra Leone.
