A suspected explosive device, believed to be a remnant from Sierra Leone’s civil war period, has been discovered in Sumbuya village along the Waterloo–Masiaka Highway in Koya Chiefdom, prompting a swift security response and the isolation of the affected area.

According to security reports from the Masiaka Police Division Information Unit, the alert was raised following the discovery of the object, after which a coordinated response team was immediately deployed to the scene.

The operation was led by the Local Unit Commander of the Masiaka Division, CSP John B. Koroma, with reinforcement from personnel of the Waterloo Division and officers of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces. Security forces acted quickly to assess the situation and prevent any risk to nearby residents and road users.

Following the intervention, the surrounding area was promptly cordoned off and placed under strict security control as a precautionary measure. Authorities say the move is intended to ensure public safety while technical experts evaluate the device.

A specialised bomb disposal unit has since been contacted and is expected to safely handle and neutralise the suspected explosive.

Meanwhile, residents of Sumbuya and commuters using the busy Waterloo–Masiaka Highway have been strongly advised to stay away from the vicinity until clearance is officially given by the relevant authorities.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin, condition, and potential risk level of the device.
