The Western Area Rural District has on Friday, August 26th, 2022, handed over an ultra-modern market structure to the people of Yams Farm Community in the Western Area Rural District.
The Type -One- Market is well ventilated, spacious to facilitate easy movement, equipped with concrete tables with a butcher market and a room for fish mongers. It also has an office space for the ward secretary to monitor the activities of the market. A good drainage system- accessibility and the ground properly paved.
The market will serve the Yams Farm Community and its surrounding areas.
According to Councillor Edwin Kargbo, ward councillor of WARD 319(Yams Farm) who also doubles as Chairman of the Revenue Committee in the Western Area Rural District Council, it’s a great moment for them, and the people of Yams Farm should now know that their taxes are properly utilized by the Council to bring them developments.
He extolled the leadership of the Council to ensuring monies collected from the people are utilized well in development projects meant for them.
Edwin Kargbo admonished his people that the “market is devoid of politics.”
“It’s ours, especially the women. We should take care of it for future generations. There are other developments the proper utilization of this market will attract.The Council has been doing well for us. Previously, they supported us with one hundred bags of cement and other building materials to construct our police post.”
Jonathan Pierce, Chairman District Budget Oversight Committee, said the market is a beautiful structure. He appealed to those charged with the responsibility to look after it to ensure continual maintenance. “Monies collected should be used for the purpose of the maintenance of the market. The dumpsite is also a key aspect of the market.”
Youth Leader of the Yams Farm Community, Kadrie Dumbuya, thanked the Council for their support in providing the market space with them. He assured that the youths will continue to give their help.
Chief Administrator of the Western Area Rural District Council, Mr. Ram Tom Farmar, stated that the market will help the people of Yams Farm from the burden of having to travel long distances to purchase commodities.
He pointed out that they are accomplishing such projects in the district because of owned source revenue.
He disclosed that the Yams Farm Market Project cost Le625,000 new leones.
“This market is an example of a way the Council gives back to the communities in terms of the monies they pay as taxes. We will continue to work with your councilor- work with the chairman to ensure more developments for the Yams Farm Community. We need to secure the structure. We are also going to work with the Central Government to help us through the RMFA to get it right doing better drainages for the market,” he added.
Deputy Chairman of the Western Area Rural District, Cllr Robert A Browne, pointed out that the market is one of the duties of the Council.
” One of the reasons you voted us was to bring developments. This market is one of the manifesto promises of Chairman Kasho J. Cole. Yesterday, we commissioned about five projects in the district. It indicates the Council is working for its people.”
Chairman Browne appealed to the people of Yams Farm to make adequate use of the market space.
“People should register and do business from tomorrow. It will reduce the transportation burden and easy the population at Waterloo market. We made it to be disable friendly. Use the market if you want other projects to come, he advised.
He officially commissioned the market.
This market is part of three market projects the Western Area Rural District Council under the leadership of Chairman Kasho J. Holland Cole, has embarked on. Yesterday, the Council launched a market project that will cost Le 580,000 new leones at Goderich. The Council is also constructing, unarguably, the biggest market space in the district, in Waterloo.
