Abacha street is one of the many streets in Freetown where street trading is common for many as their means of survival.
Few days back, the installation of guardrails has been seen on this street which has made street trading impossible for traders who use to sell at Abacha street.
With regards, the mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyer has said this action by the authority has affected many families as most of these traders are the ones supporting their families and were not informed about the ongoing project at the street.
The Mayor went further to explain that this is not the appropriate time as schools are about to reopen, and the economic situation of the country presently is not encouraging and also said most traders use loans (macro credit) to do their business and these creditors may even send people to prison if they fail to pay their debts.
The Mayor explains that there is an ongoing project to relocate street traders to the Seawah grounds market which is yet to be completed and by the look of things it will not be available soon.
The Mayor ends by saying there is a communication gap between the council and the central government because things are happening in the municipality without the knowledge of the Freetown City Council but said she will not sit but will continue to reach out to the authorities concerned to salvage the situation.
