Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr Clarifies Agreement With New Haven City

The Mayor-elect of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has replied to a press release from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs about her signing of an agreement with the Mayor of New Haven City in the United States.

The Mayor was accused of signing an agreement when she has not sworn to the Oath of Office the press release read.

The press release from the Ministry also proposes some positions which are:

1. That the said agreement between the Mayor of Connecticut and the former Mayor, now Mayor-Elect of Freetown City Council is null and void.

2. That Yvonne Aki-Sawyer is not properly seated to enter into any agreement for and onbehalf of the Freetown City Council

3. That the Sierra Leone Ambassador to the United States contact the Mayor of New Heaven, Connecticut on the position of the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs

4. That this act of fraudulence will be investigated to bring out details of the source of funding for this illegal engagement.

In reply to the above positions the Mayor-elect took to her social media where she said, “Simply acknowledging the existence of a Sister City Agreement legally signed in 1996 and wishing us well for the future is in no way entering into a legal agreement as clearly stated by Mayor Elicker (Mayor of New Haven) in his “Thank you” email below.”

The question I have is , how did she get the email access to the invitation? Is she still in receipt of emails and communications for and on behalf of the Freetown city council? Who pays for this engagement? How many other people were invited to this occasion ? Does she represent Freetown city council without assuming oat of office ? I personally think we as a country should be doing things right . The same institution that gave her the mandate to be called mayor elect is the same institution that gave the govt of the day that power to govern . Lonta

Why can’t we Africans be straight forward and objective instead of twisting and bending. No one is disputing her that she is not mayor but she was the one who created that “ Sensors on her Mayoral climax “ so if she and all the others siding her , could explain to us the meaning of “ Protocols “ then she should have waited until she have taken office. First and foremost the mayor elect does not take directives from an illegitimate government. Mr. Local government minister did you get the mandate of the people to occupy that office of yours. Do you guys respect the constitution of Sierra Leone. The Mayor elect has every right to represent the city in any agreement whatsoever because she gets her mandate to continue in office from the people. Therefore Mr. illegitimate minister questioning a legitimate mayor about properly sitted is the greatest joke of all times. Be warned and leave the people's Mayor to enjoy the trust of her people. I wish the Mayor elect should have waited until after she assumes office to embark on such visit. There are procedures to follow as a government and I pray that this next 5 year term of the Mayor will be politics free. She will knuckle down and serve the city well as I have no doubt of her capability. She MUST forget about party and focus on Freetown. Let us join hands to make Sa Lone great again!

Madam Mayor elect, Yvonne Aki Sawyer has no respect now for Sierra Leone laws and values. How can she make such agreement without following due procedure of The Local laws of Sierra Leone.? That baseless agreement must be regarded as baseless and insult to her personality and APC rank and files. We are a sovereign state, governed by legal binding relationship.
